Pat was born and raised in Brantford, ON. He obtained a B.Sc. at the University of Waterloo where he was first exposed to research in organic chemistry in the labs of Dr. Victor Snieckus. After working for a summer in Finland, he continued his studies at the University of Ottawa with Dr. Alex Fallis, obtaining a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry.

Subsequently, he completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship with Dr. Leo Paquette at The Ohio State University. He followed this stay by accepting a position as a Research Scientist at Boehringer Ingelheim where he worked on the discovery of small-molecule inhibitors of the Hepatitis C virus.

Following five years as an industrial medicinal chemist, he decided to return to academia and joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Concordia University as an Assistant Professor in 2008.
