Report on the 34th POMs

November 10 - 12, 2006.

The 34th Ontario-Québec Physical Organic Mini-symposium was held in the Département de chimie, de l' Université de Montréal, on November 10-12, 2006.  It was expertly organized by Jeff Keillor, Will Skene (both of U de M) and Michelle Chrétien (of Concordia University). The Website for the meeting is still accessible here.

On the Friday evening the opening mixer and registration were held at "Les Trois  Brasseurs", a brew-pub at 1356, rue Ste.-Catherine Ouest, in downtown Montreal.  Photos can be seen HERE .
The meeting went off smoothly with 110 official registrants. On the program side, there were 41 posters and 24 oral presentations. The vast majority of the talks were given using Powerpoint presentations - just one using overheads.  Unlike last year, there were a few minor presentation errors most likely due to problems of PC-Mac compatibility or to the use of different versions of the software.
Again, as we have come to expect at POMs, the standard of the presentations given by students and post-docs was very high and so choosing the prize winners was a difficult task. The four deserving winners were:
  • Alexandre Drouin (Sherbrooke/Lessard & Spino), poster on "Ring Contraction of a Lactam: Mechanistic Investigation".
  • An Ngo (McGill/Cosa), talk entitled "Towards a Liposome Beacon: FRET between Conjugated Polymer and Lipohilic Dye".
  • Paul Billone (Ottawa/Scaiano), talk on "Fluoresence Quenching of Quantum Dots by Nitroxide Radicals bound to the Nanoparticle Surface".
  • Svetlana Tzvetkova (Toronto/Kluger), poster on "Biomimetic Aminoacylation of tRNAs".

About 80 people attended a classy Banquet on the Saturday evening, held at the restaurant, "Le Parchemin", in downtown Montreal.  Photos can be seen HERE .

A very special "Thank you" to the symposium sponsors:

Finally, "Merci beaucoup" to "Les Trois Mousquetaires" - Jeff Keillor, Will Skene and Michelle Chrétien, and to their helpers for all their efforts in bringing about a highly successful meeting.
