Describing data via summary statistics
Samples and populations typically consist of many individual observational units and their associated measurements (variables). Both can be described using quantities such as the mean, median, and variance. When calculated from a sample, these quantities are called statistics; the corresponding values for the entire population are called parameters. Because we usually observe only a sample, we use sample statistics to estimate population parameters and make inferences about the population, while accounting for the uncertainty associated with sampling.
