POMs was started up in 1973 at the instigation of Nick Werstiuk of McMaster University, aided and abetted by the late Keith Yates (1928- 2006) of the University of Toronto. The first meeting was convened at the Inn on the Park, in Toronto, in November 1973, and it has been held every fall since, at various places in Ontario and Quebec, and twice in the USA - locations detailed below.

From 1973-1986, POMs were organized on year-by-year basis but problems of continuity arose.  As a result, in 1986 the coordination and planning of future POMs were put into the hands of Ossie Tee (Concordia U) and Tom Tidwell (U of Toronto) who continued in their roles until 2003 when the reins were passed over to Heidi Muchall (Concordia U) and Bob Lemieux (Queen's U).  After 10 years, Bob requested that he be replaced and his "position" was taken by his former student Ken Maly (Wilfrid Laurier U).  Heidi and Ken's addresses and contacts are given on the POMs homepage.

In recent years POMs have received moral support and sometimes seed money from the Organic Division of the Canadian Society for Chemistry, for which the organizers and participants are most grateful. Similarly, POMs have also benefitted from financial assistance from various pharmaceutical and instrument companies, as well as support from the Departments and Universities of the organizers.

The POMs website was created in 1998 by Ossie Tee.

POMs meetings are generally held on a weekend in late October or early November. The normal format is as follows:

Friday evening: Registration and mixer.

Saturday: Registration, talks, lunch, talks & poster session. Dinner.

Sunday morning: Talks until lunch.

The preference is for short talks and posters on recent work and contributions from students and post-docs are especially welcome. To encourage their participation, the registration fee for students and post-docs is kept very low.

For more details of running a POMs symposium, see POMs Guidelines.

Point of Information:

According to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, the word "symposium" originally referred to an Ancient Greek after-dinner drinking-party with music, dancers, or conversation. Nowadays, it is more likely to refer to a philosophical, scientific or other friendly discussion, or to a set of contributions from various authors.

The Websters' Dictionary agrees. Sym-po-sium (sim-'pO-zE-&m also -zh(E-)&m); plural sym-po-sia /-zE-&, -zh(E-)&/; or -siums. Etymology: Latin, from Greek symposion, from sympinein to drink together, from syn- + pinein to drink.

1 a : a convivial party (as after a banquet in ancient Greece) with music and conversation
1 b : a social gathering at which there is free interchange of ideas.

2 a : a formal meeting at which specialists deliver short addresses on a topic or on related topics.

At each POMs, we try to combine both the ancient and the modern usages of the word "symposium".
