Lecture 13: One-Sample Testing
October 24th, 2024 (7th week of classes)Developing further intuition on statistical hypothesis testing; and one-sample tests for a continuous variable (normally distributed)
The first part of the lecture draws an analogy between statistical hypothesis testing and the U.S. judicial system, a widely used pedagogical approach in introductory statistics courses to foster a deeper, long-lasting understanding of hypothesis testing.
The second part of the lecture focuses on statistical hypothesis testing for continuous variables assumed to follow a normal distribution. The first test introduced in this class of methods is the ‘one-sample t-test,’ showcasing the foundational use of the t-distribution in assessing statistical significance.
